This week's loot (27th November 2010)

I've mentioned before how I love Haganai, so I guess there's no need to elaborate any further.

As you might be able to deduce from RO-KYU-BU! #3-6, I started reading the series (I got #1-2 quite some time ago) and enjoyed it, prompting me to get more.

And yes, I am fully aware of how one of these things is not like the others.

Totally forgot that I had Tactics Ogre PSP ordered, arrived today.

Also, if you haven't noticed from my Steam gamer card, I got Oblivion for the PC too.

Also Left 4 Dead 2. Pity I forgot to check the spec requirements before getting it. Bah.

I can sort of run it on the PC when everything's set to low, except that the framerate drops to roughly 0.5 FPS when there're too many zombies.

Konorano 2011

So, Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! 2011.

Haganai ranking #2 is nice, but I find it somewhat odd how it's ended up so popular while previous works by the same author are still pretty much unknown. Especially considering how Haganai is extremely similar to Ranobe-bu. Nekuroma was really good too.

It's the art, isn't it? Even if there's not much of a difference in the content, get a popular illustrator to do the cover and bam, huh? Damn it people, what do we say about judging a book by its cover?

I've read five of this year's top ten series, and another two I haven't read yet but already have in my backlog, yet I still can't help but feel that the ranking is... I don't know, just wrong. I don't know, it just doesn't feel right.

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu and SwordArt Online are the ones in my backlog, so discussing them will have to take place at a later date.

Index at #1. I think I've mentioned before how I just got totally bored halfway through the final battle of the third book. I'd actually grown pretty fucking bored by the first, and the second was pretty bad too. Of course that's just my opinion and tastes, maybe there're people who like it. You know, just like how there're people who eat dogs and monkey brains, or get turned on when watching people get enemas. I guess I just happen to fall in the minority group when it comes to liking Index.

I'll just leave this here.

Bungakushoujo is good, though I have to admit that I haven't been keeping up with it lately. It certainly deserves a spot in the list.

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii wake ga nai! is decent, I guess. Enough for me to keep up with it, but not good enough for me to want to get it ASAP whenever a new book is released.

The Seitokai series ranking so high is another thing I just don't get. I've read up to #5 and while I don't dislike it, it feels really out of place on a top ten list. Maybe it's just me, but the series just gives off really amateur feel. The characters feel more like mouthpieces for the author than actual characters, the humour is just trying too hard and (for me, at least) failing hard, much of the dialogue feels forced, and there are attempts at being witty that come off as just being... well, not very witty. I used to be an avid reader of webcomics, and Seitokai gives me the same feeling that many amateur webcomics did.

Amazon has been recommending me Kami-sama no Memo-chou for a looooooong time, I ought to check it out someday.

Now let me get to stuff that isn't on the top ten list.

Full Metal Panic is #11.

Fucking bullshit.

This isn't opinion, this is fact. That Furumeta isn't anything but #1 is already pretty ridiculous, but not even in the top ten? With stuff like Index and Seitokai up there?

Ugh. Just... ugh.

Ah well, in the end, it's a popularity contest. Out with the old, in with the new (especially if it a TV series recently!).

Soukyuu no Karuma isn't even in the top thirty, which I find disappointing, but at least that I had expected. I mean, come on, the 2channel thread is up to its third thread. And the second wasn't even used up before it died from nobody using it. It's a pity, because the series is really good.

I'll write more once I've had time to read more of this. Maybe.

Dragon Age: Origins (3)

About the Archdemon...

[21:58] <@Vel> Yeah. That tends to make it a bit tricky. Usually you get a bunch of friends helping, depending on how you did the earlier quests
[21:58] <~Me> What?
[22:00] <@Vel> You can bring Loghain (though alistair leaves if you do), that bald elf, whisperfang, swiftrunner, the dwarf paragon, and I forgot who else
[22:00] <~Me> Er
[22:00] <~Me> Bald elf + Whateverfang dead
[22:00] <~Me> Werewolves made human
[22:01] <~Me> Crazy lesbian dwarf killed
[22:01] <~Me> Loghain killed
[22:01] <~Me> Yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaah
[22:01] <@Vel> Yeah, that would explain it

[22:02] <~Me> >>You can once again call on your armies to assist you
[22:02] <~Me> ...I assumed you couldn't because they didn't follow me into the fort.
[22:03] <~Me> DAMN IT.
[22:03] <~Me> >>Arl Eamon
[22:03] <~Me> I don't recall seeing him anywhere (I did save both his wife and son, though)
[22:03] <~Me> >>First Enchanter Irving or Knight-Commander Greagoir
[22:03] <~Me> Helped the mages, playing as a mage, neither showed up.
[22:03] <~Me> >>Swiftrunner or Zathrian,
[22:03] <~Me> See above
[22:04] <~Me> >>Kardol
[22:04] <~Me> Who?
[22:04] <@Vel> That's the legion of the dead dwarf you meet before the crazy paragon
[22:04] <~Me> ...who?
[22:05] <@Vel> Dead Trenches segment. Bunch of dwarves fighting darkspawn on the first bridge. Kardol's the only one you can talk to
[22:06] <~Me> ...I didn't notice that.

[22:06] <~Me> .
[22:06] <~Me> Oh.
[22:06] <~Me> You will be joined (PC only) by Arl Eamon, First Enchanter Irving or Knight-Commander Greagoir (depending on choices made during Broken Circle), Zathrian or Swiftrunner (depending on choices made during Nature of the Beast), and/or Kardol (if you persuaded him to join your armies), who can help you with the Archdemon.
[22:06] <~Me> You will be joined (PC only)
[22:06] <~Me> (PC only)
[22:06] <~Me> (PC only)
[22:06] <~Me> Why
[22:06] <@Vel> That... yeah
[22:06] <~Me> the
[22:06] <~Me> FUCK?

[22:07] <@Vel> Also, you apparently missed an entire army
[22:07] <~Me> And half my party who got slaughtered before I could do much.
[22:07] <@Vel> Kardol shows up in Orzammar after the paragon quest is over, talk to him to recruit the entire Legion
[22:07] <~Me> So yeah, you're supposed to take on that thing with a ton of people and I did it with two?
[22:07] <~Me> I rule.

[22:07] <~Me> ...
[22:07] <~Me> Ballistae on the towers?
[22:08] <~Me> Didn't notice that either.

Edit: I tried fighting the Archdemon again, summoning the elves to help and using the ballistae.

I defeated it really quickly without anyone getting knocked out at all.

Dragon Age: Origins (2)

Cleared the game.

As usual, stats.

Had a pretty tough fight against the Archdemon. It took out Morrigan and Oghren halfway through and I ended up fighting it with just myself and Alistair. Spammed ice and lyrium potions to freeze it while Alistair hacked away, with both healing themselves whenever HP dropped below 50%.

By the end I was decked out fully in dragonbone plate armour, and had a whole ton of magic active all the time.

The whole flaming glowing transparent death-sucking man with magic swords look was pretty cool.

Played a good character this time round. If you checked out my profile on you'd have seen I already had another character (human warrior) but I don't plan on playing him just yet.

No, my next character's going to be a deranged and evil dwarf. Have to think of a name.

It's a pity you can only set the first, and not last names freely in Dragon Age. Because I have some pretty cool ideas for an evil dwarf's surname. Just saying.

21 November, 2010

By the way...

It's been pretty much confirmed that I'll be staying in Japan indefinitely (at least two years) from the second quarter of 2011 and on. Might be going over a bit earlier to settle accommodations and stuff first, though.

Just saying.

I'm wondering if I should bring my TV and game consoles or buy new ones. My PS3 and 360 are the fat models, after all.

I'm also wondering what immigrations would think if I brought my entire game collection over.

Amazon. Again.

I- I just-

You know what, fuck it, I don't have anything to say.

You pay the same (ridiculous) amount regardless of how many parts we split your order up into, they say. Oh wait, the amount is ridiculous because they split your fucking order up into a million parts.

I've said this before, but seriously, shipping on the same fucking day?

Edit (22nd November):
Yes, I'm supposed to believe that my stuff is arriving tomorrow.

Which, incidentally, is the same day that the book which shipped on the 19th and still hasn't gotten here, is supposed to arrive.

Even though they were supposed to ship it yesterday and still fucking haven't.

And they just randomly delayed another book.

Nice. Choke on a dick, assholes.
